This is it! On Wednesday, November 11, 2009, I will be on an airplane headed to my next basketball home. I will be headed to Bakersfield, California, to participate in pre-season training camp for the Bakersfield Jam. The Bakersfield Jam is a NBA Development League franchise.
I remember when I could only wish for this opportunity when I first graduated from college and now it is right in front of me. Im encouraged with then chance to compete with such a competitive league. After a great season in the Premier Basketball League with the Vermont Frost-Heaves, earning all PBL honors and earning a spot on a list of top minor league players this summer, the NBA Development League has taken notice. I went to a try-out in San Francisco this summer and really did well and I made the cut allowing teams the chance to draft me. I have now earned the chance to compete for a spot on the team.
This summer was the launch of my vision of a fun, safe, and affordable basketball camp for kids in the community. The camp went great and the kids had so much fun, the flagship location for The Pro Experience Basketball Camp was in Grove City, Pennsylvania; the home of my high school alma mater, George Jr. Republic. I learned a lot from directing the camp activities that helped me as a player and coach. I have a new respect for the coaching profession. I also had the opportunity to train at Florida State University and was able to play with some very talented players, from the past and in the present. It really can say a lot about a program when “big time” D-1 coaches take the time out to help you even after you transferred from their school. Thanks Coach Jones…
I can say that this summer was really peaceful; I lived in the countryside of Jefferson County Florida population 13,000. I lived on a plot of land with my grandparents; I ran on clay dirt roads and meditated in front of bonfires. All in all, this summer was the summer I needed to take my game to that mental level of profound peace. With peace comes a higher sense of focus and confidence, which is the difference from minor league players and big league players.
I still have a lot of work to do; I am on the try-out roster, which means I have to make this team. So, “This Is It” a chance to take another small step forward towards my short term and long term goals. See you in Cali!
